Yahoo site will be maintained for a period of time to ensure all interested parties remain informed. To maximize the new forum’s value, you will need to log in and establish an identity. It would also be useful to browse around the various links to find out what features you find useful.

November 25, 2004
Burke Lake player statistics (sign-in box) for Nov. 2004 (Oct. 18-Nov.21) totaled 1,071 (weekend: 54/day; overall: 32/day). This is about the same as last November’s total.

November 1, 2004

October 26, 2004
Results of the Bluemont Fall Pro-Am (VII) are available.

October 18, 2004
An additional survey for the Laurel Hill course was made (Tim Beron and Tom Usselman).

We spent almost 3 hours hacking through thorns to get a better feel for possible course flow patterns. Tim wrote the following:

Even though I have been working on this for several months, I really had no idea of how HUGE Laurel Hill is until we found a vantage point near the old prison power station. We looked along the electric wires and by counting the number of poles we could approximate where the other end of the property was. We had a clear uninterrupted view of 2,433 feet or 0.46 Miles across the Giles Run Valley.

September 13, 2004
An additional survey for the Laurel Hill course was made (Tim Beron, Tommy Donelson, Duane Ludwig, Dave Lulchuk, Joe Pelchat, and Tom Usselman). Our visit revealed some constraints that were not anticipated by working with aerial photos and topo maps; we are modifying specific details. This included some areas that were steeper than anticipated and other issues with multiple “crossings” of Giles Run and its floodplain.

September 6, 2004
We will have an additional site visit to the area of the new Laurel Hill Park on Monday, September 13 to refine our preliminary course layouts. Access to the area is still controlled by the Fairfax County Park Authority;

August 14, 2004
The Laurel Hill Park Master Plan was approved by the Fairfax County Park Authority on July 28, 2004, and INCLUDED DISC GOLF.

August 13, 2004
The nine new baskets at Burke Lake were installed and are now ready for play. The DGCNV work crew that installed them were Tim Beron, Ragnar Overby, Joe Pelchat, Kirk Stell, and Tom Usselman. Reactions have been very positive and your putts will not bounce out as they often did with the 25-old dilapidated baskets that were replaced. The remaining baskets are scheduled to be replaced next July (2005).

July 26, 2004
Burke Lake officials notified us that they have RECEIVED 9 new baskets for the Disc Golf Course. These are the Pro Disc Catchers (from Innova). After discussion, they have ordered lockable sleeves and anchors, which will allow us to have several pin placements on many of the holes. These should be received by early August and the DGCNV will do the installation; many of the initial placements will be moved by 10 or so feet to allow play during installation and reduce the wear and tear on the highly compacted pin areas.

July 26, 2004
A DGCNV contingent (Tim Beron, Tommy Donelson, Dave Lulchuk, and Tom Usselman along with Fairfax County Park Authority planners) surveyed the designated disc golf area at the new Laurel Hill Park. The land is still off-limits. There is an existing 80-car parking lot and is close to a proposed park visitor center. The land has open fields and woods, varied  topography, streams, and a pond. It is currently rugged and overgrown but less than what Seneca Creek was when it was initially being developed.

We will not have full access to the land for several more months. We have a preliminary plan for the layout of the first 18 holes, but this cannot be formalized until we get further access. One thing is clear, we will need to work our tails off to develop a disc golf facility but it will be worth it!

July 18, 2004
Results of the 22nd Duck Golf tournament posted.

July 5, 2004
A small DGCNV work crew performed needed maintenance at Burke Lake in preparation for the July 10-11 22nd Duck Golf tournament. Long tees re-leveled, baskets fixed (to the extent possible), debris removed from fairways, and litter collected.

July 3, 2004
Player statistics at Burke Lake for the period May 17 to June 30 showed 3,692 players (daily average of 82; weekend daily average of 132). Totals for the Fairfax County Fiscal Year (July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004) were 19,765 players.

June 29, 2004
Fairfax County officials at Burke Lake Park “promised” to purchase at least 6 news baskets for the course in mid-July. We are trying to convince them to buy more; the DGCNV will finance at least one additional basket on the purchase. Individuals who wish to personally contribute to a basket fund are welcomed to contact us (The DGCNV will organized a work crew for installation.

June 29, 2004
The DGCNV was the feature on PDGA Radio (www.pdga.com/pdgaradio/index.php); Tom Usselman discussed the DGCNV statistics for player use of Burke Lake Park and the sign-in box.

May 5, 2004
DGCNV presented testimony to the Fairfax County Park Authority in support of establishing a disc golf facility at the new Laurel Hill Park

March 23, 2004
Burke Lake had 1,966 players (who signed in) between February 16 and March 16. Nice weekend weather started to bring the disc golfers out after questionable winter weather.

January 6, 2004
The Burke Lake’s course had 1,037 players who signed in during the time period Oct. 20 to Nov. 16 (about 18 % used ZIP Codes outside of Fairfax County; 11 other states were represented). During the period Nov. 17 to Dec. 21, only 850 players signed in (18% outside of Fairfax County and 7 states represented). Colder weather and early darkness has taken its toll. For the first 10 days of the current fiscal month we had beautiful weather and Holiday breaks and the counts exceeded the totals for each of the previous months. We still estimate that only about half the players bother to sign in based on random checks on the course.

October 13, 2003
The Fox 5 Morning News feature on disc golf this morning came off well. It was a great opportunity for us to promote the sport and we may have reached 10s of thousands of viewers. Thanks to all that participated – Timber, Tony Ellis, Becky, Dan, Tommy D., Ted Z, Ragnar, all performed well; my forehand flick roller even worked and ended up 4 ft from the basket.
