Disc Golf
Facility
Laurel Hill Park
Laurel Hill is a 2400-acre
tract of rolling land that used to be the site of the Lorton Federal Prison, which
was closed a few years ago and transferred to Fairfax County.
The Disc Golf Cub of Northern
Virginia (DGCNV) actively encouraged the Fairfax County Park Authority to
include in their Master Plan for the Laurel Hill Park a modern,
championship-level, disc golf facility. Options for disc golf include 18 to
36 holes, multiple tee pads, and multiple pin placements. The facility would
be designed to challenge the most expert players as well as being conducive
to beginner and intermediate play.
We attended countless planning
workshops and sessions and public hearings; disc golfers throughout the area
provide supporting letters and emails to the Park Authority over the 17
months of the Master Plan development process. The
Laurel Hill Park Master Plan was approved by the Fairfax County Park
Authority on July 28, 2004, and INCLUDED DISC GOLF.
The proposed area for disc golf at Laurel
Hill Park was visited by the DGCNV (Tommy Donelson, Tim Beron, Dave
Lulchuk, and Tom Usselman) on Monday, July 26, 2004; Fairfax County park
planners accompanied us. There may be over 50
acres that we could use! Adjacent to the area is an existing 80+-car
parking lot and will be close to a proposed park visitor center. The land has
open fields and woods, varied topography, streams, and a pond. It is
currently rugged and overgrown but less than what Seneca Creek was when it
was initially being developed.
We will not have full access to the land for several
more months. Working from detailed aerial, topographic, and flood plain maps,
we have preliminary plans for the layout and development of:
- a
“recreational” (tournament par 54, about 5500 ft) 18-hole course, and
- a
“monster” (tournament par 70 or 72, about 9000 ft).
These cannot be formalized until we get further access;
at least 2 more visits are scheduled for September.
One thing is clear, we will need to work our tails
off to develop a disc golf facility but it will be worth it!
