Northern Virginia Courses
(Map)
Burke
Lake Park (Fairfax Station) Link includes course map,
photos, and score card. Somewhat tight course although average hole
length is about 215 feet. Longer tees add a little length, about 235 feet,
but requires higher accuracy. Hosted a PDGA SuperTour event (Duck Golf) until
1996; now a C-Tier tournament. Nine temporary holes averaging over 320 feet
are added for tournaments. Novice and social course; expect crowds. Installed
in 1979; modified Mach-I baskets. Short tees are regulation concrete; long
tees are packed dirt. Course drains well and playable during and right after
rain.
Bull
Run Regional Park (Centerville) Link is to PDGA Course Directory
with little additional information. This is a pay-to-play ($2/day) course.
Geared to novices but there is a set of longer tees. Flat and not very
challenging; average hole, even with long tees, is less than 200 feet. Installed
in 1979; Mach-I baskets; small concrete tees. Somewhat muddy during rainy
season and bring bug spray.
Pohick
Bay Regional Park (Lorton) Link is to PDGA Course Directory
with little additional information. This is a pay-to-play ($2/day)
course. More difficult than Bull Run; shorter but tighter than Burke
Lake. Novice and social course. Hosts a PDGA C-tier event every December.
Average hole length is less than 200 feet (but tight) and no alternative
tees. Six temporary holes added for tournaments, but doesn't add much to
difficulty. Installed in 1979; Mach-I baskets; short concrete tees. Drains
fairly good, a few muddy tee areas possible.
Bluemont
Park (Arlington) Link includes course map, photos, and
score card. Somewhat tight 9-hole course with elevation changes. There are 3
tees (all new concrete) for each hole (and the long ones can be very
difficult) and 4 pin positions (pins are changed and mixed regularly). Long
tee to long pin record (for players with a 1000 pt PDGA rating is +4 for 9
holes!) but all 4th pin position only used for tournaments. Course installed
in early 1980s, well maintained; Mach-III baskets.
McLean
Central Park Link is to score card and course map.
Semi-tight 9-hole course with 2 tees per hole (most long tees are not well
marked). Length averages about 200 feet per hole. Water hazard on a few
holes; flat course (we call it the swamp—wet, thorny, and buggy). Course
installed about 1980; dirt tees, Mach-I baskets.
