DGCNV Virginia Open Sponsorship Event Members of DGCNV avoided the thunderstorms in Fairfax County by getting off to the Grange to determine who would represent the Club at this year’s Virginia Open. A month or more of publicity and planning did not draw as many members as expected, but the event did draw 4 new members and a handful of friends for two rounds and a nice lunch. The members also made a $35 donation to the Virginia Open. The battle for the Pro and Am sponsorships for the VO was settled in the 2nd round. Among the Ams, Naved took a 4 shot lead to the Original Course and held off a charge by Erik S, who shot a solid 3 under. Naved finished 1 over par for the two rounds, two ahead of Erik. Naved will have the honor of the Sponsorship at the VO. These scores by our two top Ams indicate they will represent the Club well at the upcoming A-tier event. Hopefully, Ryan Jones and other Am entrants will make use of these two practice rounds to compete well. The 5-man pro field saw a bit closer competition. New member, Will Kuper had a solid 1st round, shooting a 3 over, 57 and carried a one shot lead over Joe P, 4 better than Tommy D and 5 over Dennis A. Consistent shooting allowed Joe to overcome the 1 shot deficit and pull away from Will. Joe picked up 10 birdies and shot a personal best, 47, 7 under on the original course. Dennis and Tommy never got things going and ended up 10 back. Joe captures the pro sponsorship for the VO and should place well in the Masters Division if these two rounds give any indication of how he will do. This Club event was intended to pick a sponsored player for the VO, generate a donation to the VO from the Club and create some recognition for the Club and our activities. It is obvious to all the first two points were accomplished as planned. As far as recognition for the Club, four new members registered on Saturday in order to take part in this event. During the week leading up to the14th, there was some interest shown in our event by some of the Maryland golfers. The Club also contributed to the feeding of a few dozen hungry golfers at lunchtime. Certainly the Club will benefit from the positive PR and general camaraderie of events like this. The Club welcomed new members Sean Mayo, Konrad Pawlosky, Will Kuper and long time associate John Manzione. Will and John compete in Pro divisions. Sean came on short notice with his entire family to meet the Club members and enjoy a day at the Grange. Konrad hit the only Ace of the event on hole nine during the 1st round. He also lost his shoes on a sinkhole, trying to retrieve an errant throw. Thanks to the members who drove and helped get everyone there in time for the 10:00 start. Special thanks to Ty Ainge and son Austin, who manned the grill to serve up cheeseburgers, sausages and fries to the crowd. The Club would also like to express gratitude to Mike Trapasso for the hospitality he provides at the Grange. |
