The cornfields of south central Pennsylvania played host to the DGCNV traveling circus over the weekend of August 20th. Out in the middle of nowhere, where the purchase of beer is a real hassle, Club members found 18 tees and baskets set among the rolling hills of Bob Havle’s spread.

For the second year in a row, Bob invited disc golfers to play on his land. This year 14 players participated in two days of competition. And what competition it was. Some of the Club’s most active members were on hand to test their golf skills against the challenge of steep terrain, heavy woods and a scorching sun. Three rounds in one day made for a long, grueling day but the after party was an event in itself.

Most of the members were prepared enough to arrive Friday night and had a late night putting and conspicuously consuming. The rest of the participants arrived Saturday morning while

the early arrivals had a breakfast of Apple Jacks. Three locals from nearby Altoona joined in the fun after a practice round.

The course has a nice variety of wooded, and open holes with a lot of terrain changes making for some unusual shots. The view from the peak provides an expansive view of the surrounding hills. One of the big challenges of the course is the walk up the hill to get to hole one, and those who had to do it mid-round were at a significant disadvantage. Some eventually played the two holes on the biggest hill at the same time to save the strenuous walk.

Bob put $300 added cash into the Am and Pro pots. Also there was $100 for the first ace, which no one hit. The Club had received a shipment of new Pro line discs, including Starfires, Valkaries and Rocs. The Club put up 5 all day CTPs. The payout would be generous and deep

The first round got started around 10:45. Joe and Ty set the pace with scores of 47, -7, a score that would not be beaten over the next 2 rounds. Local Am, Eric Kiem, took a lot of heat from the Club’s Ams but maintained the lead throughout the tournament. The first round ended with Ty and Joe up by one over Erik and two over Jeremy. Steve C was in second, one shot ahead of Rob L.

After a short break to count the scores and some quick refreshment, the second round got underway. In the heat of the day, Ty was able to stay in 1st place by one, losing a shot to Jeremy, who matched the low score of 47. Erik and Joe shot 50 to drop back 2. Rob picked up 2 strokes on Steve to take over second place.

A bunch of tired sweaty golfers were ready for lunch. Being in a very rural area, there were few places to eat. A small-town country store was the nearest option. We woke up the storekeeper and asked if we could get a sandwich from the small menu. He informed us he could only make hoagies. “How about a ham and cheese?” “We only got hoagies” “Can you put mustard on that?” “Hoagies come with mayo and Italian dressing” “What If we buy mustard off the shelf?” “You can put it on yourselves” “Thanks, Pop” Luckily they had ice. Someone suggested calling the event “The Bring Your Own Mustard Challenge”

Back at the course, we had lunch and got ready for the 5:00 tee time. A couple of changes were proposed to the course to make it a bit more challenging. Three holes were lengthened, setting up one of the most picturesque shots you will see on 18 (see the pictures).

Ty held off the challenge from Erik, both shooting 52 on the longer configuration. Jeremy wasn’t able to make a charge and Joe faltered in the heat. The competition was great and it was a rare opportunity for these four players to play head to head.

In the Am division, Erik Kiem held on to the lead, beating Rob L by 5. Steve C and James C tied for third.
